WHILE training for a marathon, it can seem as if a runner has to cover countless miles. But a training log, either paper or virtual, can help tally the workouts.

A log helps to reinforce what you do, said Ryan Lamppa at Running USA, a group that promotes the running industry. Seeing workouts on the Internet or on a hard copy at home helps a runner stay focused. It can help a runner do more good training or change workouts during a rough spot. Both types of logs have space to record the basics route, distance, time and notes but most online logs offer more. Almost all sites have a mapping feature to track and store a route. Many also have social features, such as tools that allow members to see one anothers workouts or routes. Sales of paper logs have tapered off slightly as more runners go online to keep their information, said Brock Quimby, the general manager of Boulder Running Company in Denver. By contrast, one Web site, www.mapmyrun.com , has been adding 2,000 to 3,000 registered users a day and has seen growth of about 300 percent in each of the last two years, said Robin Thurston, head of MapMyFitness Inc., which runs this and other fitness Web sites.
